Staten Island Chiropractor Dr. Victor Dolan's Techniques for Safe Driving

Even for a very careful driver like Staten Island Chiropractor Dr. Victor Dolan, driving safely in Staten Island is a challenge. Over the last thirty years, I have seen a lot of folks in my chiropractic office in Staten Island who have gotten their necks and backs damaged due to whiplash from an auto accident. The resultant pain can be a terrible burden both on the job and in your everyday enjoyment of life.

Whiplash

Whip
lash is caused when your head moves abruptly backward or forward often as a result of a car accident. Even slowly moving vehicles can produce enough impact energy to cause whiplash. The impact of the accident results in injury to the muscles, tendons and ligaments of your neck.

Note that you may not experience symptoms of whiplash for a day or more after an accident. But if you have been in an accident be on the lookout for some of the following symptoms of whiplash:
  • pain, swelling, stiffness and tenderness in the neck area
  • muscles spasms in your neck and back
  • shooting pains in your neck, arms and shoulders, and
  • headache.

Physical Therapy

See your healthcare professional as soon as possible if you are suffering pain from whiplash as a result of an auto accident. The sooner you seek treatment, the less chance for permanent damage to your neck and back. There are a number of very effective treatments available to your doctor that have been found to help reduce the pain caused by whiplash, such as traction, physical therapy, heat and ice therapy and ultrasound.

The good news is a lot of the risk of getting hurt while behind the wheel can be avoided if you have a knowledge of Defensive Driving Skills. Taking preventative measures is the best way to avoid the pain of whiplash:
  • You should always wear your seat belt.
  • Adjust your headrest to the proper height. The middle of the headrest should be even with the top of your ears.
  • Your car should be equiped with seat belts with shoulder harnesses as well as headrests. Shoulder harnesses have been proven to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and death in the event of an auto accident.
